Hillhouse Students Volunteer with NHS of New Haven and United Way
Hillhouse Students Volunteer with NHS of New Haven and United Way
On August 11th, 2009 forty-two high school football players and their coaches filled four thirty-yard dumpsters with plaster and lathe. They spent hours on the hot summer day gutting the interior of an abandoned house recently acquired by NHS to be rehabbed. The students were from the local Hillhouse High School, and the volunteer event was an excellent opportunity for them to give back to their community. Their efforts received significant media attention, both in the local evening and late night news, and in a national Untited Way campaign.

As a result, 39 nursing students co-facilitated 21 programs and served over 300 girls between fall 2009 and 2010.

GLA Ghana: Volunteer Abroad Program for High School Students
Ghana: Its villages will charm you, its scenery amaze you, and its children welcome you. Ghana is often called the heart and soul of West Africa because of its welcoming, passionate, and peaceful people. It is a particularly important place, because it is where many African-Americans can trace their roots. Besides volunteering to help local children, you will immerse yourself in the vibrant African culture, visit the historical slave forts on Cape Coast, and hike through lush tropical forests and large natural reserves home to monkeys and hundreds of birds and butterflies. Some may say that changing the world is a hefty goal. But at Global Leadership Adventures, we believe that you have the power and compassion to make this old world of ours a much better place! That's why we offer service-learning excursions to Africa, Asia, and Latin America for students like you who want to make a lasting impact and learn how to be global citizens capable of positive change.
